Optionality

For thirty-two years I read the last ninety seconds of other people’s worst days. Most of that work was aviation — the recovered recorder, the voices in the cockpit, the small numbers off the flight data unit — and the job was always the same: find the cause, and change a procedure so the next crew lived. You cannot re-fly the flight. You can only change the checklist.

I did not set out to write a book about your life. I set out, late and from a hospital bed, to run the investigation on my own — and I found the finding I had written a hundred times about other people and never once turned around. The cause is almost never the last thing that went wrong. It is every small deferral upstream, the checks skipped because there was still time. I had spent a career reading that sentence off strangers’ recorders, and it took a stranger’s defibrillator to make me read it off my own.

This book is about a particular kind of quiet disaster, the most common one there is: the un-chosen life. Not the life ruined by a dramatic wrong turn — those are rare, and at least they have a moment you can point to. The life lost to a hundred small “not yet”s, each one reasonable, none of them a decision you would ever admit to making. You have been told, your whole adult life, to keep your options open. No one ever read you the recorder on what that costs — the meter running on every propped door, the go-around you keep declining because there is still time, the default quietly deciding your life while you call the waiting freedom.

Here is the finding, and I will give it to you now, because unlike a whodunit this investigation does not turn on suspense. Not deciding is not a pause you are holding in reserve. It is a decision — a decision in favor of whatever happens while you wait, entered on your behalf, every day, by the default. The lease decides. The salary decides. The path of least resistance decides, competently, in its own interest, which is not yours. You believe you are keeping your options open. You are handing your choices to the least thoughtful agent in the room, and calling the abdication freedom.
